Far and Away Short Answer Questions
1) What did you learn about how political machines work?
I learned that political machines were one of the, if not the, most powerful individual figures found in America. They possessed a large amount of wealth and power. Their power comes from their complete control over Boston. For example, Mike Kelly had complete control over the rooming industry which prevented Joseph from finding a place to stay after he lost the fight against an Italian.
2) What did you learn about the immigrant experience in America?
I learned that immigrants were rarely hired. So immigrants had to branch out to find dangerous and risky jobs, such as working on the railroad, fighting with people in a fight club. Furthermore, their lives were filled with complications. Due to the large amount of immigrants coming to America in search for "free land" many people rejected them.
3) What did you learn about the Oklahoma Land Rush?
I learned that land was split into quarters, and that it is definitely better to ride alone without a wagon to pull as it adds on a lot of weight. Furthermore, horses should not pull wagons as their strength would easily cause a wagon to fall apart. Land would be marked with stakes. As the name suggests, whoever reaches the land first to plant their stake gets the land.
4) Shannon had some preconceptions about America, which were true and which were not as true?
Shannon expected America to be distributing land for free. Also, she expected America to be much more modern. However, the cost of reaching the land as well as making money to afford the trip proved to be a struggle, as well as America's modern views to be somewhat more distorted.
